While sitting at dinner Friday night, the family and I were brainstorming what my next waffle creation should be. Chloe suggested those “apple dumpling things”.
Growing up in a PA Dutch household, homemade apple dumplings – topped with milk and sugar or sometimes ice cream – were a perfectly acceptable dinner on some evenings.
It seemed like an easy enough challenge and I realized I had the right ingredients so I gave it a try.
I could have used canned apple pie filling, but that wasn’t good enough and I ended up sauteing the apples with butter, brown sugar and spices.
Once the apples were soft I unrolled the pre-made dough (I am not Martha!), filled them and baked them in the waffle maker for about 10 minutes on the low-medium setting.
My children ate them topped with canned whipped cream, but plain they are similar to an apple turnover. Next time I think I will drizzle a bit of white icing, but all-in-all it was a success.
Apple Pie a la Waffles:
- 4 apples – peeled and chopped
- 2 tbsp salted butter
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (or more to taste)
- dash nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1 package pre-made pie crusts
Saute apples, butter, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg on medium to low until soft, about 10 minutes. Turn off heat, add vanilla and let cool for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile preheat waffle maker to medium. Unroll dough and cut into 4 equal pieces. Fill and fold over to make a triangular packet. Bake until golden brown. Optional: Top with caramel sauce, ice cream, white icing drizzle or whipped cream.
And as always, don’t ask me to come clean your waffle maker.
Happy Waffling,
Kirsten
